The Kirkendall Public Library  & The Ankeny Academy of Music

Invite you to wonderful year of  FREE TO THE PUBLIC events for Ankeny and area adults –

“The History of the Symphony” 

To be held on Mondays between 12:30 and 1:30 in the meeting room of the Neveln Center over 24 weeks in 3 eight week series beginning October 2nd.   Have you ever wondered how the symphony came about? 

Find out through DVD presentations prepared by and presented with the permission of The Teaching Company, for your “life-long learning” and enjoyment.  You will hear recordings selected and performed by the San Francisco Philharmonic Symphony with narrations by Dr. Robert Greenberg, their composer-in-residence.  A member of the Library staff and a faculty member of the Ankeny Academy of Music will be on hand to greet you and share a discussion after the program if you like.  It is FREE – you are invited and welcome.  The Library is wheelchair accessible.  Come, bring your friends!!

The Ankeny Academy of Music has begun its Fall term September 5th.. Private lessons will be offered in all teaching areas. Also, many special classes and camps are planned.

  • Early Childhood Classes- Classes are for parent and child. Siblings, yes. Music to stimulate communication with songs, instruments and rhythm activities. Classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • Jazz Improvisation- for ages 12-18 and adults. What is this American contribution to creativity in music?
  • Guitar Classes- A great way to begin the guitar and have fun with your friends. Classes meet twice a week. All ages welcome! Limit 5 to a class. Mon./Wed. 1-2 p.m., or Tues./Thurs. 2-3 p.m.
  • Summer Strings
  • Flute Choir- An opportunity for registered flute students to develop musicianship skills through ensemble experience. Area students and adults are welcome.
  • Beginners' Fife Camp- An inexpensive instrument that is a great way to begin to learn flute. The fife came early to the New World colonies from Europe, as a military instrument with soldiers and a folk instrument with settlers.
  • Choral Camp-Children's Musical for SummerFest "Schoolhouse Rock" (Auditions begin May 19th)
  • Pre-Band Classes- A new concept developed with cooperation of area band directors. It is for children about to enter into band who would like a head start in reading music notation and understanding music.
  • Keyboard-Musicianship Classes- Small group classes arranged by age and study-level.
  • The Symphony- A 6 week class for adults. DVD projected 24 part illustrated lecture series presenting the history of the symphony in four parts. We will offer the series over four terms. Music by the San Francisco Symphony taught by Professor Robert Greenberg.
